Start getting your final accounts in order from day one

If final accounts cause you a headache on nearly every contract, the way to ease the pain at a time when you are most keen to get paid could be to get into the habit of 'day one final accounting'.

Are you going into contracts without realising what your employer is expecting of you in terms of keeping monthly variations up to date and maintaining records as you work through the project?

If you are, it could be the reason why you face problems when submitting your final accounts for payment - and why you don't always get what's due to you.

Take a look at Bob's story - he's in it up to his neck. Sound familiar?

The solution is to do your final accounting as you go along, from the very start - we call it 'day one final accounting'. It is a 'little and often' approach where you take time throughout the contract to confirm and agree all cost aspects as it progresses. By doing this, and not leaving it all to near the end of the project, you can ensure that upon completion or shortly thereafter the account can be agreed.

Costs will be confirmed as the works progress and your employer will have an up-to-date accurate projection of the final account at every juncture. This eliminates any 'surprises' and maximises your chances of recovery.
