Site Operating Procedures updated with '1m-plus' rule
The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has this week updated its Site Operating Procedures, which have governed our working practices on-site throughout the pandemic, to reflect the latest Government guidance. If you are a subcontractor, make sure you understand how these changes could affect you and your business!
The move follows the easing of lockdown measures in England from 4 July to allow for 'one-metre-plus' social distancing guidelines. This requires that workers stay two metres apart, or one metre with risk mitigation where this is not viable - mitigation measures may include installing screens, wearing a face covering and avoiding face-to-face contact.
You can read the CLS's full Site Operating Procedures document here, but in general the changes brought by version 5 are minimal, and include:
According to Construction News, previous editions of the CLC advice document, which has been comprehensively adopted by the industry, have allowed workers to carry out tasks at distances of less than two metres when social distancing at that distance cannot be applied. However, they advised the time spent doing such tasks be minimised, and workers should perform tasks side-by-side rather than facing one another.
What this means for subcontractors
Subcontractors should take a moment to read the latest SOP guidance to establish if the new site working arrangements could result in any further restrictions, and thus additional delays and costs. You don't want to be out of pocket as a result of the CLC guidelines but remember that any cost implications that were not part of your original contract will need to be notified to the contractor - or you certainly could lose out!
Quantum CPM can help. We work with subcontractors across the UK to ensure contracts are fair for both parties and unexpected changes during the contract are managed properly.
If you are a subcontractor who needs to notify your client about additional delays and costs, we can approach them on your behalf. Contact us to find out more by dropping us an email on or calling 0161 974 6655.
